I admit that I am the man that spent all of my time a couple of weeks ago playing Arkham City which is awesome by the way.

Well one DVD/Blu-Ray that recently came out is Batman: Year One.

I know what you are thinking. Isn’t that Batman Begins? Well, not really.

You see the things about these flicks is simply Warner Premiere releases a line of Direct to DVD flicks in the DC Universe. They are primarily animated movies based on popular comic storylines. Some are flat out taken from the pages and placed on the screen while others are loosely based on the original work.

Now what I like about these are that they not only include the flick but they also are loaded with special features that are a present for many and all DC Comics fans.
These features include special documentaries on not just the story and the making of the flick but in-depth documentaries on the original work detailing the process from inception to the market reaction and the legacy of the work.

Some releases also include biographies on writers and Artists and profiles of the villains as well as the behind the scenes origins of certain characters such as Robin, Supergirl or the Darkseid.

Other features include Animated Shorts that follow smaller characters in the DC Universe. Not to mention selected episodes of Batman: The Animated Series, and Justice League.

These Features alone are worth the purchase of the Disc.
Batman: Year One is no Exception.

The main movie features outstanding animation telling the story of both Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon as they arrive in Gotham City for different reasons.

Wayne is returning to Gotham after traveling the world for thirteen years learning the skills to make him a crime fighter, and coming to Gotham to begin his mission.
Gordon is coming to Gotham to accept a job as a Police Lieutenant for the corrupt GCPD.

The story follows the characters as they narrate their story “Dexter Style” as is in the original Comic.

Other Characters featured in the story are Selena Kyle following her origin to become Catwoman as well as her young protégé Holly.

The flick will keep you entertained if you can forget the fact that you saw the whole story before in Batman Begins.

Now let us get on to the Special Features.

The documentary Heart of vengeance tells the story of how the writers and artists of DC Comics’ journey of taking Batman from his campy 1960’s image to his Dark Roots and the origins of the Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and his return for Batman: Year One and the direction that the franchise to the Dark Knight Rises.

Other Features include a round table discussion with the heads of Batman at DC discussing the directions of the character and where he is going in the future.
What I mainly want to talk about here is the Catwoman short film that first off is HOT in some parts. Catwoman voiced by Eliza Dushku pursues a criminal across Gotham to uncover the truth behind his smuggling ring.

The short is awesome.

There is very much a Catwoman theme to this release. Could Dark Knight Rises have something to do with it?

Anyway this release is definitely a Buy for all Batman fans.

5 Dead Bodies
0 Breasts (close in the Catwoman short)
3 Beasts
4 Car Chases
3 explosions

3 Stars

Comic Fans Check it out!

Casey C. The basic plot is the audience is shown home video footage of someone filming for a verity of reasons. Then without warning something happens and the person filming doesn’t either cut or run out of tape or battery power and it usually ends with the deaths of the characters or we are told what became of the characters. For many years the genre was marketed as a true story and what we are seeing is the footage that was found. Sadly in recent year’s people are much harder to fool.

I love the found footage genre. Most people complain about it but I like it. Now I admit that some of them like Cloverfield gave me a migraine but sometimes that happens. Hell, there are some Video Games that give me a migraine so I am going to leave that there.

Well I recently decided to check out Chronicle which is a different approach to the subgenre. This flick is both a found footage flick as well as a Superhero flick. However it takes its own approach.

The Flick follows three teenagers, cousins Andrew, and Matt and popular teen Steve as they go to a rave and find a hole in the ground with a strange glowing plant inside. Later on the trio discovers that they have strange powers as a result of this encounter.

Andrew who is relentlessly bullied by both his abusive father and classmates becomes the strongest of the three and begins to see himself as the “Apex Predator” and goes down the dark path leading to a confrontation with the other characters.

One interesting thing about the shooting of the film is the fact that it is filmed with not just one camera and that the characters can use the cameras with their powers so making it look like it is being filmed by another person. I also like the visual effects in this flick, especially in the scene where the kids are flying and encounter an airplane.

The characters are likable and the story where we are shown Andrew’s decent into becoming a super villain.

I definitely recommend this flick.

3 Dead Bodies
0 Breasts
2 Beasts
2 Explosions
1 Car Chase

3 Stars

Casey C. Allot of it is their documentaries. They have some of the best topics especially in their America Undercover line. Now I have to admit that I am not a big fan of the Taxi Cab Confessions but to each their own.

One documentary that was made by HBO was shot in 1993 titled Paradise Lost: The Child Murders of Robin Hood Hills. The film follows the murder of three children in West Memphis Arkansas and the 3 teenagers accused of their murder. What the film crew realized while they were making the movie is that the three accused Jessie Misskelley, Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin, who would become known as the West Memphis 3 were convicted based on circumstantial evidence and mostly prejudice due to the fact that they wore black clothes, listened to bands like Metallica, as well as they had read Stephen King books.

Now this documentary did what documentaries are supposed to do. They are supposed to make you think and a good documentary is supposed to make you angry. This documentary did both of those for me.
Paradise Lost told me the story of a modern day witch hunt. Just the fact that you could be not just accused of murder but also convicted of the crime based on the fact that you wear black and are a little different. It makes be thank my lucky stars that my Father’s business transferred him to Texas where I was raised and not Arkansas.

In 2000 a sequel was made titled Paradise Lost: Revelations that follows the reaction to the original film.

Well into 2007 new DNA evidence was uncovered and Filmmakers Joe Berlinger Bruce Sinofsky began shooting the next installment of the West Memphis 3. The new evidence was so strong that John Mark Byers, adoptive father of murder victim Christopher Byers, Who was long outspoken about the guilt of the WM3 changed his position as well as victim Stevie Branch’s Mother Pamela Hobbs.

In August of last year The Arkansas Supreme Court ordered that the WM3 be granted a retrial 18 years later allowing all of the new evidence. However in a surprise move the WM3 were offered a Alford plea bargain where they still plead their innocence but they change their plea to guilty and they are sentenced to time served.
Now There are a lot of angry people on this decision, most namely the three men wrongly convicted of the crime that they did not commit as well as their families as well as the families of the victims.

Now you ask ,Why was this plea bargain made?

It is simple The state of Arkansas did this in order to avoid a new trial because if there were to be a retrial and the WM3 were found to be innocent then there would be many of civil trials that would follow. There would be suites from the WM3 as well as the families and the cost should go well into the millions.

Not to mention the fact that the killer of the children walks the streets.
Now let’s talk about the flick.

I definitely want to recommend the other two flicks to all of you but the truth is that it really isn’t that much of a necessity. The flick goes back to the beginning and shows the case and the evidence that was not brought to the trial. It is different from the first as now it is all done in hindsight which is always 20/20.

We are then shown the people involved in the case and where they are now. The most interesting person here in my opinion in Mark Byers ,because he is featured prominently in the previous documentaries loudly claiming the guilt of the WM3. He even goes as far as to argue with the other supporters. Byers is also a suspect in the murder of not just his son but in the death of his wife who had passed since the original film and is shown submitting to a polygraph that he passes.

Well in the decade since Revelations, Byers has done a complete 180 and is now a strong supporter of the “Free the WM3” movement. His attention and anger is focused on the new suspect in the case as well as the West Memphis Police Department for locking up the wrong people.

I have to give credit to Byers for looking at the facts and then admitting that he was wrong and even receiving a letter from Echols. Now the flick spends a lot of time following Terry Hobbs who is named as a suspect and then sues the Dixie Chicks for Defamation after she mentions him as a suspect.

The imagery at the end of the documentary is highly moving as we are shown images of the three being released and returning to their families and it is shot and edited for great storytelling.

This is how to make a documentary.

I not only recommend checking out this documentary, I will even recommend this flick for Oscar Consideration.

Casey C. They get a pretty bum rap especially in horror flicks.

Here is the recipe for one of these flicks.

A group of college kids go out to the woods to drink, smoke Dope and have pre-marital sex and at some point run afoul of some local yokels that proceed to chop slash and mutilate them.

That is the basic Slice and dice, but did you ever think of it from the redneck’s point of view.

Well that is the plot of Tucker and Dale vs Evil. A Horror/Comedy currently available.

This is the story of Tucker and Dale a couple of friendly rednecks that have just purchased their new vacation home and they have to fix it up.

Now there is a good chance that the cabin in the woods may have belonged to one of the members of the Texas Chainsaw family because it is covered with Bones and plenty of creepy news clippings of past crimes and disappearances in the area. Tucker and Dale have their own ideas about their origins.

Well there are also a bunch of College kids heading out there for their party activities and they run into the duo and make up their own minds about them and a simple misunderstanding results in a massive bloodbath.

This flick is both entertaining and funny as Hell with great blend of both Slapstick comedy and Bloody kills. Fans of Sean of the Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre alike will enjoy it.

I say that it is a good Saturday night movie to check out with a six-pack of Beer and your friends. I definitely see a cult following in the future.

11 Dead Bodies
2 Breasts
5 Beasts
1 Car chase
1 Explosion
2 Impalings
1 Burning
Weed eater to the face
Machete to the Throat
Finger Fu
College student Fu
Saw Blade Fu
Wood Chipper Fu
4 Stars
Check it out

Casey C. I admit that he is who inspired me the most to become a filmmaker.

I had the honor to meet him at the 2010 Texas Frightmare Weekend.
(Which the DVD featuring an EXCLUSIVE QnA with Carpenter and the cast of Christine is available at www.texasfrightmarevideo.com).

Now with the exception of two episodes of Masters of Horror Carpenter has not directed a flick in a decade, Not since 2001’s Ghosts of Mars. He did help produce some flicks but other than that he had taken some well-deserved time off.
Now he has returned with John Carpenter’s The Ward.

This was a Damn Good Flick and I am not just saying that because the director is one of my favorites,My Manager was watching the flick as well and she agreed.

It is the story of a young woman who after setting fire to a farmhouse is arrested and taken to mental hospital and placed in a ward with four other girls. It turns out that there is a malevolent spirit in the ward that is picking off the girls one by one and are preventing them from escaping the Asylum.

The flick definitely has the Girl Interrupted meets The Ring feel as Amber Heard tries to piece together the identity of the supernatural menace leading us to a twist that even I did not see coming.

Kudos go to Amber Heard as Kristen and to Jared Harris as Dr Stringer.

It definitely shows that Carpenter hasn’t lost his touch.

Cinematography was excellent. However it felt different that Carpenter did not score the movie as he had so many in his past. That being my only Issue and I can accept it.

5 Dead Bodies
0 Breasts
1 Beast
1 Spike to the Eye
1 Electrocution
1 Slashing

4 Stars

Check it out

Casey C. All goes well at first she even finds herself attracted to her landlord (Jeffery Dean Morgan). That is until the flick reverses itself and we are shown his point of view and see that he has devised the whole thing and just how far he will take obsession.

Believe me it is pretty creepy especially when Swank gets back with her estranged boyfriend.

This flick is definitely worth checking out. The pacing is very suspenseful in a DePalma kind of way. It is shot very nicely as well as the characters are all likable as it is shot and you find yourself feeling sorry for the stalker before he makes you hate him when he crosses that line of no return.

Fans of Psycho I recommend this to.

3 Dead Bodies
2 Breasts (Possibly a Body Double)
1 Beast
3 Stars
Check it out

Casey C. I am a huge fan of many franchises and one of is the Fast and the Furious Franchise.

Now I have to admit that when the flick first came out I didn’t see it in the theatre. I have to say that the add campaign didn’t exactly win me over. I sat in the theatre to see the Mummy Returns and all I saw was cars and the plot sounded like a ripoff of Point Break.

A year later I decided to check out the flick on DVD and I loved the flick and bought the DVD the next day.

In 2003 I was in Las Vegas when 2 Fast 2 Furious opened and I also checked out the flick. Yes I liked the flick but not as much as the first one.

I admit that when Tokyo Drift came out I passed on it because I heard that no members of the original cast were in the flick. Then I checked out the flick in 2008 and saw the last cameo with Vin Diesel .

I knew when I saw the Trailer for Fast and Furious exactly what it was before I saw Dom Toretto and Letty robbing a gas tanker and I drove my car and watched the flick at the Galaxy Drive-In on I-30.

Needless to say I am a fan and I read the reviews of Fast five and they were pretty much all the same in the comments that only the fans would go see this flick and I am a little bothered by that statement.

You see Yes I am a fan and it was a much different flick than the others. This flick was much more of a Heist flick. More like Ocean’s Eleven than Fast and Furious.
Now I am not going to complain about that because I liked the change in direction and I love the inclusion of The Rock in the series.

What I liked the most about this flick is that it starred characters from all of the other flicks.

Now Fast Five did have some drawbacks. This is the first in the series that seemed to have a contract with Dodge that was almost exclusive. The final chase sequence felt like a 2011 Dodge Charger commercial.

Now I am here to review the BluRay and the special features are outstanding. I definitely recommend the pocketBlu App that has some exclusive features and views. There are some documentaries on the BluRay that are worth the price of the disc alone.

12 Dead Bodies
0 Breasts
5 Car Chases
1 Demolished Bank
13 Smashed Cars
2 ½ Stars
Check it out

Casey C. As a matter of fact I was surprised that it wasn’t at the Alamo.

I am also surprised that this flick wasn’t a “SyFy Original Movie”.

Now the reason that I point this out is that I was one of three people sitting in the theatre, That is a sad state of affairs.

The flick is maybe too ahead of the October Halloween crowd but this will be the first year that there is not a Saw sequel in the theatres for quite some time however the flick did have the trailer for Paranormal Activity’s third installation coming out this October.

We need some good mainstream Horror that isn’t a remake or part of a tired franchise that is R Rated and I have to ask is anyone else out there tired of the PG era that we have in Horror, I mean if it isn’t produced by Spielberg then why not go for the UNRATED crowd this here flick was a good try.

The plot is something that we have all heard before a group of young people all head out from the city to the country to go camping and they stop by a gas station that is run by Sid Haig (boy does this sound familiar) and then they are told about a local legend (That sounds familiar again) and they decide to head out and look for the local monster. (I am almost expecting Bill Moseley and Sherri Moon Zombie to pop up somewhere but that isn’t going to happen).

Needless to say we all think that we are having Déjà vu and know what is going to happen next. Well we do. Our “Heroes” go out and get their drink on as well weed is involved and then decide to do some of the old premarital sex, which usually I would not complain but some of these couples are siblings if you know what I mean and I think you do.

However then there is the twist that I didn’t see coming and this slasher flick becomes a crossbreed between Hatchet and Deliverance but it still maintains its decency and does not go off in a Lake Dead kind of direction. That is all that I am going to give you for now as I want you guys to go catch this flick preferably in a place that has a liquor license since this is a six pack kind of flick.

Fans of creepy monsters from lakes will be very happy as there are some Black Lagoon moments as well as a reference to Spider Baby which was the Great Sid Haig’s first flick. The flick is full of unlikable characters and some likable but you find yourself rooting for the monster to kill everyone but this flick goes off in a way too creepy direction but like I have mentioned earlier I am happy that this flick is an R Rated Horror.

I definitely recommend this flick to the late night monster no brainer crowd.

9 Dead Bodies
8 Breasts
3 Beasts
4 Bad Accents
Hands Roll
Feet Roll
Heads Roll
Kudos to Sid Haig for showing us how important a good Villain is in a horror story
2 ½ Stars
Check it out

Casey C. I admit it; as a matter of fact I have always admitted it. I like all of them. Even the 2001 Tim Burton fiasco that not too many people what to admit happened.

I recently attended an event at the Drafthouse that they called Day of the Apes. Now what that was a marathon on one Sunday morning that began with the first Planet of the Apes flick starring Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowell, followed by Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Then Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and ending with Battle for Planet of the Apes.

Now of those flicks the one that I want to talk about is Conquest. Many consider it the best in the series, second only to the original. I have to admit that I like this flick more than the others in the series.

Conquest is the tale of the real origin of the Planet. The story is that a plague has killed off all of the dogs and cats on Earth and mankind’s pets have been replaced by apes. Eventually Apes are made into slaves and are forced to do meaningless tasks and are beaten and abused for disobeying. That is until Caesar comes along and after hearing of the death of his friend and caretaker (Ricardo Montalban) arranges a revolution that results in the Apes taking over the world with the line
“Tonight we have seen the birth of the Planet of the Apes.”

When that line was said at the screening the whole theatre erupted into applause.

This year has seen the release of the Remake/Reboot of that flick.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Now this flick is not a prequel to the 2001 Ape flick this is a reboot of the Ape series.

The story follows James Franco as a scientist trying to find the cure for Alzheimer’s that his father is suffering. He is experimenting on a drug/virus on Chimpanzees that result in one chimp going crazy. (Anyone else reminded of Deep Blue Sea) It is then revealed that this chimpanzee had a baby and was pregnant while the tests were conducted. That baby becomes Caesar an super smart simian that sadly is placed in a zoo like shelter where he is mistreated by the caretakers and begins to start a revolution. That is all I want to say about the plot because there are some cool twists that I don’t want to give away right now.

Now I have to say there is some damn good CGI at play here in this flick. Sometimes I thought that I was watching the 2005 King Kong flick especially when I saw Andy Serkis in the role of Caesar.

The story also kept me interested in the fact that I did not feel that I have seen all of this before, in the fact that the new material is fresh and relevant and a brand new story to an old tale.

The acting is great especially from James Franco and John Lithgow. I was also enjoying the rest of the cast comprising mostly of lesser known but familiar faces from Television and other Sci-Fi flicks.

The use of references to the previous Ape flicks I also loved.

7 Dead Humans
3 Dead Apes
0 Breasts
32 Beasts
1 Explosion
1 Crashed Mustang
Human Fu
Ape Fu
Extra points for making me think that these Apes are smarter than the people in Washington right now.

4 Stars

Check it out.

Casey C. Well our infamous texter called and left an angry voicemail saying that she was allowed to text in a THE-A-TER because this was the MAGNITED STATES OF AMERICA…Which I am still trying to figure out there that is.

Anyway Kiddies I can tell all of you something about the Alamo Drafthouse. You see there not only is no commercials for Sprite or lame Coca Cola short films.

What you get instead is a pre movie reel that is relevant about movie that you are about to see.

For example the first flick that I checked out there was Scream 4 and what they showed was a trailer reel of the previous Scream flicks as well as other Scream Rip offs and a few more obscure flicks that many of you may not recognize.

Then when it is Showtime you are shown a funny video making it clear that cellphones, Talking, and Texting is not allowed which makes it clear on no uncertain terms that you will be thrown out and not get a refund.

Another thing that she said is that it was too dark in the theatre and she was using her phone as a flashlight to find her seat. I’ll tell you something a real good friend of mine works at the Alamo and his job is to run food and drinks to the tables and it is not that dark so.

This chick has to be legally blind and if that is the case then what in the blue Hell is she doing going to the movies anyway.

Needless to say what we here Kiddies is a spoiled brat who can’t handle being punished for her actions. I tip my hat to the Drafthouse for using this to their advantage.

Now on to the flick.

Last week Eric and I decided to head over to the Drafthouse and check out a screening of Troll Hunter.

The plot is about a group of filmmakers that are following what they think is a hunter that is illegally poaching bears only to find out that he is in fact following trolls and that he works for the government keeping the local troll population under control while finding a way to humanly dispose of them.

This is one of the more interesting of the found footage genre in the fact that you actually get to see the monster in all of it’s glory and not in fleeting glimpses like many other flicks such as Cloverfield and Blair Witch.

Generally this a pretty good flick it makes you laugh and It keeps the suspence up when it matters.

I was impressed mostly by the special effects in the fact that the trolls looked real though clearly CGI but good CGI there are some model scenes but they are cut well into the movie.

Now this flick is Norwegian and it does have subtitles but you don’t have to be fast to read the dialogue and watch the movie and you won’t even notice after a while like most international flicks.

1 Dead Body
0 Breasts
8 Trolls
Exploding Trolls
Stone Trolls
Man in Armor vs Troll Scene
Truck vs Troll Scene
1 Car Chase
Human Fu
Christian Fu
Troll Fu

3 Stars

Check it out

Casey C. Green Lantern's light!”

Those are words that I have waited 25 years to hear on the big screen. It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Batman and you can’t be a fan of the Caped Crusader without being a fan of the Justice League, one of the staples of the League is the Green Lantern. Be it Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, or Kyle Rayner The Green Lantern Corps have always been one of the more popular titles in the DC Universe.

That being said I am surprised that we are just now seeing the Green Lantern on the big screen. There has been many incarnations of him on the small screen but rarely in a non-support role as a member of the League.

Finally Hal Jordan has come to the big screen and it was well worth the wait.
Now for those of you that aren’t comic fans here is the basic story. Hal Jordan is a test pilot that is chosen by a dying member of the corps and he then gives him his power ring and Lantern that turns him into a superhero that has the ability of flight as well as the ring can make anything that he wants to aid him in his duties. He then joins the Green Lantern Corps which is basically an intergalactic police force.

In the movie Hal has to take on the Evil Paralax the Destroyer of worlds Now I have some Issue with him in the fact that he did remind me much of the antagonist in Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer and the planet Appacloypse that we saw in the series Finale of Smallville you want to ask the difference here, Well The Damn thing Talks. It ,also as well as the various Aliens that make up the corps speak perfect English.

The Special Effects are awesome the outer space sequences are excellent and I do recommend if 3D is an option go for it and pay the extra amount but it is not needed to enjoy the flick IMAX is also recommended.

Fans of the Comics will love this flick as for the mainstream audiences you will enjoy it but be warned that it is your basic superhero origin story but it is a fresh perspective to the common mythology.

87 Dead Humans
8 Dead Aliens
0 Breasts
5 Beasts
3 Explosions
Lantern Fu
Human Fu

4 Stars Check it out

Casey C. I have to tell you that that is the best Horror Convention in the world. I get to see and meet a lot of the stars that I grew up watching and getting a new perspective on some flicks that I have seen time and again. For those of you that missed the shows please check out my DVD that will be on sale soon.

One flick that I got to check out was The Woman.

I have been following this flick for multiple reasons. First off I know the director and I like to see that someone I know is successful I know better than most how hard it is to be successful in this business and anyone that makes it like this has my full support.

Another reason that I have been following this flick is the controversy that it received at this year’s Sundance Festival. What happened was that the flick was so intense that people were walking out of the theatre and one woman was in such a hurry that she tripped and fell knocking herself out. Then the real fun started when after the screening a man started yelling at McKee as he was getting ready for a post screen QnA. The man was then escorted out of the theatre spouting his opinion all along with a camera following him that became a viral sensation online.
The Thursday night before the Frightmare I attended a screening with McKee and the cast and crew in attendance.

The Screening starts off with a short by McKee starring himself, Angela Bettis, and Carlee Baker titled Blue Like You, That is the tale of a sheltered woman having dinner with McKee while he teaches her how to sit Drink and Eat.
Followed by a cartoon about a boy and his donkey that was probably more disturbing than the main feature.

The cartoons and the short felt like the old days when you got a cartoon a news Reel and a short film before the film.

Now on to the feature.

The Woman is the tale of a southern backwoods lawyer that is the dominant member of his household and one day when he is out hunting he encounters the sole survivor of the offspring (which the Woman is a sequel to) and he decides to civilize her. After drugging her with a dart he brings her home and subjects her to various types of abuse and torment including pressure hosing her down, shooting a gun next to her ear and eventually raping her. Eventually his son joins in of the actions of his father in a more sadistic way and the whole family unravels while the daughter’s teacher becomes suspicious of the events taking place leading us to a bloody finale and some twists that you will see coming but still shock you.

One of the Gripes that this man ha in Sundance is that the film was degrading to women. I found that the flick was the opposite and made me wonder who was more Savage, The Woman or the men of the flick.

Now for those of you that go to this flick thinking how bad can it be then I recommend The Girl Next Door which is also based on the novel by Jack Ketchum… As a matter of fact I recommend anything by Jack Ketchum as his stuff is pretty intense and not for the weak of heart. Well this flick is based on his writing if that is any indication of what this movie has as far as content.

That being said this flick isn’t for everyone. Some of the scenes are pretty intence and you want to run up onto the screen and knock out some of the characters but that is what Lucky did with this flick was to tap into that flight of fight part of our brains that see these things and don’t know how to process.

The most frightening part of the flick is that these things not only can really happen but that they most likely have happened before and will again.

4 Dead Bodies
2 Breasts
3 Beasts
Hosing
Finger eating
Finger licking
Something with pliers that I don’t know what it was
Human animals
Bashings
Stabbings

4 Stars
Check it out

Casey C. I feel the need to point out that some of the franchises that come out I am a harsh critic of and some of the others that I am a Die Hard fan of have been dormant for a decade or more. Franchises like Highlander, Rocky, Rambo, Indiana Jones, and Scream are those Franchises and they are all either have received a Reboot or have a Sequel popping up years after the supposed final entry.

Scream 4 has just been released, now I feel the need to state that this flick was unnessicary as I liked where Scream 3 left off. That being said I am happy that this is a sequel and not a Remake.

Taking place a decade after the events of Scream 3 the flick takes us back to Woodsboro. Sidney Prescott has written a book on her experiences in the previous flicks and is starting a book tour in the town. Dewey Riley is now the town Sheriff and is married to Gail Weathers who has fallen into a rut and she is missing her glory days. Well a new series of murders begins again in the form of the Mythical Ghostface Killer that has not appeared in a decade. This series of murders surrounds Sidney’s cousin that none of us knew about before this flick.

You need to bear in mind that a lot of things have changed in the past 10 years in not just the Horror genre but in technology. In this flick Ghostface not only utilizes cell phones in his arsenal but Facebook and webcams as well. It also makes references to the state of the genre, it bashes the torture porn subgenre craze in the opening lines and what the killer is planning on doing his own reboot to the scream/stab series. Neve Campbell has the best line in this area “The Big Rule of Remakes, Don’t Mess with the Original”.

The flick is much more violent and gory than its previous flicks but like I said earlier a lot has changed in the past few years. Some of the stabs are very intense such as a blade going through the hand and even a gutting that Craven wanted to put in years ago.

There was a lot of things missing from this flick that I liked in the previous flicks that I felt were staples of the series. First off Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ Red Right Hand which was used as an unofficial theme was not used. Not to mention that the big shock kill didn’t happen in the opening, Now there was some kills in the opening but I am not going to count those kills because they take place in the Stab sequels and not in the flick.
It should be noted that this is the first of the series that does not have Liev Schreiber and Jamie Kennedy making appearances in the flick in some capacity. I honestly would have liked to have seen some of the other residents of Woodsboro that we have seen in the previous flicks making appearances in this flick, I was wondering where Sidney’s Father was in this flick as well as Randy’s sister from part 3.

Now as for the characters, I am always happy to see Dewy, Sid, and Gale. I felt that Dewy was pushed to the back as he constantly arrives with the police after the kills which were done in the previous flicks to make him look like a suspect but all of the viewer’s already know that he is not the killer. As far as the new characters some of them are likable like the movie geeks were funny. Now as for Hayden Panettiere I felt like she was a lame attempt at redoing Rose McGowan’s character from the first flick but I felt that she was pretty annoying. Emma Roberts is pretty good in her role but she is no Neve Campbell. Now I have to admit that I am not caught up on my “Teenage Stars” that is a sign of being out of my demographic.

Generally I liked the film as it kept me entertained for the time that I watched the movie and there were some twists and kills that I didn’t see coming and for that the flick receives extra Kudos

15 Dead Bodies
0 Breasts
3 Beasts
25 Cell Phones
6 Web Cams
17 Stabs
1 Disemboweling
2 Shootings
1 Shot to the Nuts
32 Movie References
Stab Fu
Scream Fu
Scary Movie Fu
3 Stars

Check It out

Casey C. First off he had the well-publicized incident on Southwest Airlines, then he released Cop Out with Bruce Willis, his podcast empire has grown considerably as well as his recent controversial flick Red State.

Now I admit that I have been following this flick for about five years now. I have been a fan of View Askew since working for Blockbuster a little over a decade ago. Now a lot of people have said that this flick would never be made. The basic response was why a Comedy Director is making a Horror Movie, That can’t be done, and I point to John Landis, Joe Dante, and many others. I honestly feel that Horror and Comedy can go together like peanut butter and jelly. I point to classics like Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein, Shaun of the Dead, and others.

Now let us talk about the controversies surrounding the movie First off many people say that Red State is based on Fred Phelps and the Westborough Baptist Church that goes to funerals and protest the services and celebrate the deceased’s “Banishment to Hell” . The tactics of the church tend to bring the age old debate of how far can the first amendment can go. Needless to say the Phelps family has appeared at the Sundance Premiere of Red State to protest Smith and his Movie only to be met by a counter protest by 200 Kevin Smith fans.

That brings us to the big controversy with Red State. Smith announced at Sundance that he was going to tour with Red State and then release it himself under the Smodcast label. That announcement has been highly debated by the movie and internet community. Needless to say when the tour came to Texas I and my friends were there.
The evening begins with Smith introducing the film and interacting with the audience. After the screening Smith comes out again and has an almost two hour QnA. Here he talks about the film and the reasons for his decision to release it himself.

The cost for a ticket is about $70 but is well worth the price for true fans of Kevin Smith.

Now on to the flick.

The story is about three teenagers that live in a town where a fundamental preacher and his family are frequently seen protesting funerals for men and boys who were killed in a recent spree of hate crimes committed in the community. That night they respond to a add on a website to have a foursome with a woman in the area. In the process they are dragged into the inner sanctum of the Church and have to fight for their lives while the ATF are preparing to invade the compound in hopes of avoiding a public incident like Waco.

This is by no means a feel good flick. Smith even said when he introduced the flick that this is not a Kevin Smith movie, and he was right. It is a Kevin Smith movie for the first 10 minutes then it has the feel of a Rob Zombie Film.
I generally enjoyed the film. I liked it. Another interesting aspect of the flick is that there is no score the only music is the singing that Michael Park does in the scenes. Like I said the film had a gritty nerve invoking feel to it the camera work was much different than most of Smith’s other movies with the shaky cam effect and Jump Cuts and a lot of extreme close-ups and running with the action shots. I honestly was frightened by it when you see the villains in the flick and How far they actually go and in the fact that they really believe that they were doing what was right.

I would definitely recommend this flick to the Hostel and Saw crowd.

11 Dead Bodies

4 Breasts (on computer screens)

7 Beasts

2 Shootouts

1 Shot to the eye

7 Shots to the head

Heads Explode

Cult FU

Teen FU

ATF FU

3 1/2 Stars

Check it out

Casey C. As many of you know I am a lifelong wrestling fan.

I remember when the rock first showed up in the WWE back in 1996 with these blue tights and a chia pet hair style that got him booed out of the building. Now he is a big star in some people’s regard.

I was in the theatre for the Scorpion King as well as the Rundown and Walking Tall. Some of his later flicks I wasn’t that big of a fan of. As a matter of fact I was a little bothered by seeing him play a tooth fairy in his last flick.

Now I am a happy camper as I just picked up Faster on Blu-Ray.

Now first off I know that he is credited by Dwayne Johnson in his movies now but I say screw you people He is the Rock. He always has been the Rock and he always will be the Rock.

What I am happy about is the fact that the Rock is doing an action flick and what cool flick it is.

The plot here is pretty simple it is basically a modern day The Good Bad and the Ugly. What it really is the Driver, The Cop, and The Killer.

The Flick Follows the Driver (The Rock) who has just been released from prison and has set out on a vengeance mission because a decade ago he and his brother robbed a bank and he was the getaway driver and after the getaway they were attacked by a group of people who wanted the money and killed his brother and shot him in the head but her survived. He then went to prison for the robbery and was released and is now hunting the people responsible, including Courtney Gains in a small role.

In pursuit of the Driver is a retiring cop (Billy Bob Thorton) who is struggling to reconnect to his estranged wife and son while pursuing the case.

Also on his tail is the Killer (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) a self-made millionaire who is also a hired assassin who has been hired to go after the Driver.

The flick follows all three characters their Lives and what they have all lost.

The flick also stars Maggie Grace as the Killers Lover and Wife, Jennifer Carpenter as The Drivers ex-girlfriend, and Moon Bloodgood as the Cop’s Wife. Also featured is Carla Gigino as the Cop’s Partner as well as a cameo by Tom Berenger.

This is definitely a flick worth checking out. I heard that the flick didn’t do too well I the theatres, I honestly believe that this flick will have its life on DVD, Blu-Ray, and Streaming Downloads, as well as cable, in other words Theaters rent the Be All End All in the movie Industry.

The Story will keep you watching. You will get the feeling that you know how this is going to end but you will have one hell of a twist sent you that you will see the signs but you may miss them.

The Driving scenes are really cool. Driver has the best car a Chevelle LS5 SS recreation (1970 Chevelle front and 1971 Chevelle rear end) yes I love 70’s muscle Cars.

The Fight scenes are strangely short and strait kills instead of a long drawn out fight scene that we would expect from the Rock.
The Camera work and editing is also very nice definitely some good cinematography and use of angles

There is a good Alternate ending that is worth checking out, as well as deleted scenes. Not to mention the behind the scenes documentaries. Definitely worth a buy or at least a rent.

5 Dead Bodies
0 Breasts (But a lot of Bikini and Underwear scenes)
3 Killers
2 Car Chases (2 More in Features)
4 Shoot outs (1 more in Features)
5 cool cars
4 Stars

Definitely check it out

Casey C. That is very true because I always return. In other words I am sorry for the lack of reviews as of late. It has been a rough couple of months here, but as the old song goes Casey C. Corpier takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Needless to say I am back and I am here to stay. I am currently in preparation for a move to Austin where I will Join my friends there and have new business options there, but don’t you fret Dallasites I will still be taking care of the Texas Frightmare Weekend videos for all of you. Loyd Cryer is not only the best convention promoter in the country but he is also a close friend of mine.

If you haven't been over to check out the show Loyd has the best line up this year.
Robert Englund and Clive Barker are making their long awaited appearances at the Southwest's premiere horror convention as well as Roger Corman who I am particularly looking forward to meeting. Anyway please check it out.

One of the great things about the Texas Frightmare Weekend is getting to hear about movies that are about to come out that you find yourself looking forward to seeing. One of those flicks is the much awaited Hatchet 2.

Now the best part of the flick is that these flicks are a treat to horror fans. Think of them as the Expendables of Horror, meaning that you are featuring a who's who of horror stars.

Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, John Carl Buechlier, Robert Englund, and RA Mihailoff are all featured in the franchise.

Now for those of you that have not seen the first movie please stop reading now and go check out the flick available from Anchor Bay Films. The reason is because this flick picks up where the previous flick left off.

Now some things have changed since the first movie. The girl who played Mary Beth in the first movie did not return but they did us one better because the girl is played by none other than the very Beautiful Danielle Harris. Which I am particularly excited about because Danielle is a very talented actress and I always look forward to seeing her at the conventions and in this flick she really kicks butt.

Now let’s move on. Mary Beth barely survives the night in the clutches of the evil Victor. After learning the truth from Reverend Zombie (Todd) she joins him and her Uncle and many more Hatchet Fodder on a hunt to capture and kill Crowley. Well you can guess what happens.

The flick is definitely worth checking out. I particularly enjoyed the kills as well as the references to other horror flicks such as the nod to Behind the Mask the Rise of Leslie Vernon, as well as the cameos that if you blink you will miss them. The flick is also shot very well as the Swamp is gives you that creepy feeling of Isolation though you get the feeling that there is a road to help and civilization is just within reach but to get there you have to face the 7 foot supernatural madman that wants to cut you in half. If you are an owner of the original Hatchet definitely buy this DVD or better yet the Blu-Ray as it is a great companion to the DVD and it goes much more in depth into the Crowley myth and story.

Bonus Features include some great making of Featurettes and EPK, as well as trailers, TV and Radio Spots. Definitely worth the price of the Blu-Ray

17 Dead Bodies
4 Breasts
1 Beast
Inadvertent Necrophilia
Intestine Choking
Boat Motor to the face
Skull Crushing
Face Spearing
Jaw Ripping
Hatchet to the vagina
Chainsaw to the nuts
Blood Spray
Blood Splatter
Heads Role
Testiclles Roll

Kudos goes to Danielle Harris as the heroine Mary Beth, and to Kane Hodder for the Duel Role of killer Victor Crowley and his father.

4 Stars

Check it out

Casey C. There are a lot of animated movies that more adults enjoy other than kids. Another thing that I am constantly told is that the “old school” superheroes are on their way out. Once again that isn’t true and people still talk like they are for kids. Anyone that saw the Dark Knight will tell you that they aren’t just for kids. As for the animated movies that is another thing.

Recently Bruce Timm the producer and creator of the (now) old DC Animated Universe have created a series of animated movies based on the stories found almost exclusively in the comic world. Now let’s talk about the history of the DCAU. In 1992 Warner Brothers wanted to create a kids cartoon show to help promote Batman Returns. That show was called Batman: The Animated Series. The interesting thing about this show is that it was a huge hit. How huge do you ask? The series was created as a promotional tie-in to Batman Returns and was highly influenced by said movie. The show became so big that it influenced the later Batman movies in the Schumacher era and even kept carrying the torch for the Batman franchise after the 1997 disaster that is known as Batman and Robin.

The Animated series also spawned many films including Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, which I regard as one of the greatest Batman films ever made. I also recommend Mystery of the Batwoman, not to mention Batman Beyond and its movie Return of the Joker. You will hear some fans when asked who their favorite Batman’s will say Kevin Conroy and their favorite Joker (other than Heath Ledger) is none other than Luke Skywalker himself Mark Hamill.

Other than Batman Animated movies the series also opened the door for Superman: The Animated Series that treated us fans to the inevitable team ups of the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight and then Justice League.

The Continuation series Justice League Unlimited marked the end of this decade and a half long era of Superheroes that introduced these legendary characters to a new generation of fans and highly entertained an old group of them. The DCAU stepped aside Clearing the way for The Batman, Teen Titans, Smallville, and the Brave and the Bold.

Starting in 2007 DCAU fans were treated to this new era of Comic Movies that are finally put on film if only in an animated format. With such titles as Superman: Doomsday, Batman: Gotham Knights, Under the Red Hood, and even Green Lantern and Wonder Woman feature films.

Last year another came out which was based on the Superman/Batman title was another movie. The story was called Public Enemies and it featured Batman and Superman doing battle with Lex Luthor and preventing a giant kryptonite meteor from destroying the earth.

Now we have the sequel to that story called Superman/Batman: Apocalypse

Coming to earth alongside the mammoth Meteor is none other than Kara Zor-El better known to DC fans as Superman’s cousin Supergirl. Clark is happy to welcome her with open arms but Bruce is skeptical of her arrival on earth. Mentoring her to adapt to the earth with her new superpowers she eventually goes to Paradise Island with Wonder Woman to be trained to be a hero. That is until Darkseid arrives with his own intentions for the young Kryptonian.

The story plays like a feature film I honestly felt it was a superior Supergirl Origin story other than the 1984 Helen Slater movie. The most entertaining part of the flick is the relationship between the characters Batman and Superman interactions are entertaining as well as the relation ship with both characters and Kara. Wonder Woman being added to the mix adds icing to the cake.

Honestly with the inclusion of Wonder Woman I feel the title should be called Trinity as Diana Prince has a big role in the film but that would not have the selling power that the name of Superman and Batman have.

The inclusion of Darkseid as the Villain is a pretty nice touch. Fans of the Comics, Video Games, and Justice League Series will already be familiar with this villain and Smallville fans will get to know him in this current season of the show. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the character there is a really good Documentary on the BluRay and Double Disk DVDs that cover Darkseid and the New Gods.

Other Special Features include four episodes of Superman The Animated series that feature Supergirl and Darkseid.

There is also a documentary on Supergirl but that is not that original. Owners of Smallville Season 8 box set will notice that it is the same documentary and that it isn’t even updated as it is only 2 years old but it is still a good in-depth documentary that covers the like of Kara in history of comics and entertainment.

Last bu not least is an animates short film featuring Green Arrow while he is protecting visiting royalty from an assignation attempt with the help of the Black Canary. With the voice talent of Malcolm McDowell in the role of one of the villains.

All in all I say check out the movie Comic fans won’t be disappointed.

Casey C. What I really like about them is the fact that they are told directly from the comic stories that are on the newsstands.

I am particularly excited about the recent Batman: Under the Red Hood. I remember reading that story while sitting under a tree at a rock festival and being more interested in the comic than the show. That says something about a story.

Now for those of us that don’t read comics let me give you the back story. In 1980s DC Comics has the character of Dick Grayson grow up and assume a new super hero identity of Nightwing leaving Batman without a Robin. Batman found a new Robin by the name of Jason Todd. Well needless to say fans didn’t like Todd and then in 1988 they did a poll of weather or not to kill him off and the fans gave the thumbs down and Robin was sadistically slain by The Joker thus giving what is in my opinion the best character development for the Dark Knight other than the death of his parents. Now lets fast forward to 2005 and the story of Under the red Hood where Batman encounters a resurrected Jason Todd who has taken the guise of the Red Hood (a role used by the Joker before his accident that made him the Clown Prince of Crime) and Batman has to face an opponent that not only knows him better than any other opponent he was also trained by him, which makes him more deadly than any other foe that he has faced before leading to a final confrontation between himself, Jason and the Joker.

The film plays out almost exactly like the comic. There are some variations from the story such as the resurrection of Jason is different than in the comic. One thing I am saddened by is the absence of Tim Drake as the 3rd Robin. Granted he wasn’t in the original storyline but in the flick he is not even acknowledged making you wonder if he even existed in this continuity. There is a brief mention of Batgirl without even having her name said. I also felt that Nightwing is nothing more than a supporting character and his relationship with any of the characters is not explored. Not to mention that Nightwing is barely in the comic.

The Animation is awesome and is drawn like the comic which I can tell you right now that is not an easy chore.

Let’s talk about Special Features.

I recommend the Bluray or the 2 Disc Edition because the Features alone are worth the purchase. There are 2 documentaries that cover the origins of both Dick Grayson and Jason todd with great detail, There is also a really good sneak preview of Superman/Batman Aplocypse that I will be covering soon and some episodes of Batman the Animated Series and a short animated film Jonas Hex.
I definitely recommend this flick for any and all Batman fans

Casey C. Like I say about most remakes lately it feels like watching a movie that is based on actual events and thinking that it is not accurate. Another thing is that you have a micro budget flick that has been remade with a bigger budget. Now I don’t know how big the budget was but it was definitely more than the original had.

Now for those of you that aren’t familiar with the plot here is the cliff note version.

Jennifer Hill is a writer that rents a cabin in the woods to write a novel and she attracts the attention of some of the local men who one day attack her and brutally rape her, assault her and leave her for dead. She recovers and takes her revenge in some interesting sorts of ways.

Now without giving away too much there is some twists that this remake takes that you may find unexpected or some of you will see it coming. The revenge scenes are in some ways stomach churning and original, in the vein of some recent horror franchises like Hostel and Saw. In one scene I was almost expecting the puppet to come rolling out on a tricycle and announcing that they “Were going to play a little Game”. I feel the need to warn some of the weak of heart that this is not for everyone.

I feel the need to talk about the performance Sarah Butler in the role of Jennifer Hill.
Sarah had a Rage in her character that I found enjoyable. Sarah’s character had an innocence that was destroyed by the events in the film that in a sense she had snapped and becomes sort of a Jason Vorhees of the woods in her attacks and kills. But as they say no Jury would convict her.

The Remake also focuses less on the rapes and more on the torment ant torture that she suffers, Such as having to perform felatio on a gun or being reputedly dunked under water and held. However her attackers are unable to crush her spirit and she never quits.

Like I said it isn’t for everyone.

6 Dead Bodies
2 Breasts
5 Beasts
1 Penis choking
4 Teeth prying
1 Anal Shotgun
Fish Hook Fu
Lye Fu
Bird Fu

3 Stars

Check it out

Casey C. Are you wondering what this was?

Well It is like a Zombie Walk except people dressed as Zombies were bowling. If you got a spare you got a Pass for an advance screening of Resident Evil: Afterlife.

Now I have to admit the first turn I didn’t get crap…Actually I bowled a split and then I remembered how I bowled so well a decade ago. I called in good ole Captain Morgan and his first mate Pepsi, and then I got the Strike and I received my T-Shirt and a free Ticket for Resident Evil: Afterlife

Now anyone that follows my Tweets or knows me on face book knows that not only am I a movie buff but I am also a Gamer. Two of my favorite franchises are both Tomb Raider and Resident Evil. Almost any game that you can kill Zombies, while avoiding genetic creations from an evil corporation that is my kind of game.

Now as for the Resident Evil films I liked those as well. Let me explain. You see almost a decade ago there wasn’t too many Zombie flicks. Circa 2000-01 there just wasn’t any. I know that it is hard to believe. Well after the new millennium arrived the popularity of video games were getting the attention that they needed. In 2001 Lara Croft finally arrived to the screen portrayed by Angelina Jolie with mixed reviews and small success and as you can tell Resident Evil wasn’t too far behind. The flick was successful enough that it made it clear on no uncertain terms that people wanted to see Zombies everyone gives credit to 28 Days later but it was Resident Evil that fired the first shot and brought back the walking undead to the place that they are today.

7 years and 2 sequels later the film franchise is still going strong and not a reboot in sight.

Now you ask why this franchise is so successful. My opinion is because of the director.

Paul Anderson is not only a great director but he has admitted that he is a fan of the games and he tries to incorporate both elements in terms of good filmmaking and references to the source material to keep anyone that is a fan happy.

Now I admit that the movies have veered into a different direction than the games such as the world going into a total Apocalypse with few survivors where as in the games the Umbrella corporation as well as the government has covered up the Zombie outbreak and the STARS agents are fighting both the company as well as any Zombie threats that they come across. Not to mention the principal character of Alice played by series star Milla Jovovich The direction of the film series goes in a different direction around the time of the 3rd flick that also introduces to Clair Redfield (Ali Larter) who is a playable character in a few of the games. Not to say anything bad about Larter in the role because she does a great job but I still feel that she is the wrong casting decision for the role.

Now let us move on to Afterlife.

Picking up where Resident Evil: Extinction left off we see Alice and her clones attacking Umbrella’s facility in Japan where she encounters game villain Albert Wesker who is the films main antagonist. Searching for survivors Alice heads to Alaska where her friends from the third film were heading only to discover that there was no help and that Clair is the only one of the survivors to remain and she has no memory of what has happened. Alice and Clair head to Los Angeles where they find survivors in a building including Chris Redfield all leading to a confrontation with the Umbrella Corporation and their ghastly creations including the Executioner and once again the guard dogs.

I stand by my statement about fans of the games enjoying the flick there are plenty of characters from them to keep you interested as well as enough to make it a fun Horror flick. You can definitely see the influence of Resident Evil 5 in this flick.

Now Lets talk about the effects. Zombies as always look great but I am referring to the 3D. Resident Evil: Afterlife if is the first flick to utilize the cameras invented by James Cameron for Avatar like this. There are some cool sequences but I really like the fact that it is not relied on like so many of the other flicks that use 3D as a gimmick to sell the movie. I feel that this flick can be watched on DVD without the 3D experience therefore I give the movie extra points.

The flick flows very fast I noticed. When you arrive at the climax you don’t realize it and I honestly enjoyed the flick so much for this fact that myself and my brother can’t wait for the next flick and I hope that this one does well so that we can get more installments of this film franchise.

I feel that it wasn’t as good as Apocalypse but it is still enjoyable.

Just for the record please stay seated after the end of the flick there is a cut scene after the cast credits that fans will really enjoy as long as there is no one standing in front of you.

15 Dead Bodies
0 Breasts
1000 Zombies
2 Dogs
8 Alices
1 Executioner
1 Jackass Producer
4 Explosions
Heads Roll
Hammers Roll
Zombie Fu
Security Guard Fu

3 Stars
Check it out

Casey C. I don’t just mean remakes but so called remakes. These “Remakes” are remakes in name alone.
Referring to the fact that it uses the title of a previously established film or franchise and release a completely different movie but you keep a couple of shots or remembered kill from it’s predecessor. Some of these flicks such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Friday the 13th I feel play more like sequels than remakes. And then there are the relaunches or reboots like Halloween, Batman, or the 007 Franchises, but these are just annoying .
Movies like Sorority Row, Black Christmas, or Prom Night all have the same name of a “Classic” but the story is not the same movie.
Now on to the Flick
First off a little history lesson, In 1978 Joe Dante Directed a Roger Corman produced flick called Piranha. The story goes like this a couple of hikers come across an Army test site and swim in a pool that is infested with man-eating Piranha that the military had genetically altered to swim up stream in Vietnam. The project was called Operation Razor Teeth. Bradford Dillman and Heather Menzies come looking for the hikers and drain the pond into a nearby river setting the Piranha free to chow down on local campers and a just opened resort that has a lot of par-tiers and swimmers in a very memorable flick.
Piranha spawned a sequel that was titles (No pun intended) Piranha 2 the Spawning which was directed by none other then James Cameron in his first directing venture. The Spawning did not do well at the box office.
In 1995 Piranha was remade starring William Katt and Alexandra Paul which also did not do too well.
Which brings us to Piranha 3D.
Now everyone calls this flick a remake but it is that in name alone. The plot here is a earthquake happens in Lake Victoria, Arizona on Spring Break when Co-Eds and College par-tiers come to frolic. The quake releases over 1,000 of a species of Piranha that has been believed extinct for over 2 Million years and they are hungry and very angry.
The flick primarily follows the local Sheriff played by Elizabeth Shue who is investigating the strange events that are happening in the lake. While this is happening her son goes on a boat with Kelly Brook and Jerry O,Connell to shoot a porn movie and well you can kind of figure out what else happens.

The flick is a good beer drinking flick for those of us that don’t really want to watch a flick that requires a lot of thought. The humor is more parody of spring break that turns into a Bloodbath,
I liked that actually
If you are looking for that you will enjoy For those of you looking for something more sophisticated pass on it
Once again the 3D is a Gimmick the flick utilizes it but it is not necessary
48 Dead Bodies
11 Breasts
1,000 CGI Piranha
2 Boat Chases
1 Explosion
Head Crushing
Face munching
Bikini Babe Slicing
200 Gallons of Blood
Naked Synchronized Swimming
Topless Para-sailing
Penis Munching
Jerry O’Connell Fu
Piranha Fu
Opening with Richard Dreyfuss Fu (I wonder what movie that is a reference to)
2 ½ Stars
Check it out

Casey C. I know that a lot of people like to mock them by saying that they are too slow but you get 1000 of them together and then you have something to be scared of Now as for Zombie Movies we have some great ones like Zombieland and the current Resident Evil movies that are based on a popular series of video games. I admit that I killed quite a few zombies on my consoles but what can I say it’s fun.

Now as for the man that invented the modern day Zombie Flick is George A. Romero.
I’ve personally had the pleasure of sitting down with Mr. Romero and discuss the modern day Zombie epics and I also told him that I felt that Land of the Dead was the most underrated movie of 2005. Well recently Romero has gone back to the Zombie Genre with two different flicks the first was Diary of the Dead released in 2008 and now we have Survival of the Dead

For those of you that have seen Diary of the Dead and remember the scene where the main characters encounter a Military Team that robs them of food and supplies.

Well this flick follows that group when they decide to leave the mainland where they encounter a man that was driven out of a small island that was his home because he wanted to kill the zombies.

Upon arriving on the island they encounter that almost the entire island has been turned but they have been chained to their old posts and are forced to resume their daily activities that they had before they died.

Needless to say like the other Romero Zombie flicks the main antagonist of the film is not a zombie but in fact a human that has his own agenda and has to be defeated by the main characters with a little help from the zombies.

Another interesting thing about this flick is that it answers a long time question that I had.
You see we all know what happens when a human is bitten by a zombie but I have always wondered what will happen if a Zombie is bitten by a Human.

13 Dead Bodies
0 Breasts
Around 300 Zombies
1 Horse Back Zombie
1 Zombie Gunfight
10 Swimming Zombies
1 Mail Man Zombie

2 Stars
Check it out

Casey C. Every year I have a blast at that show…Ooh for those of you that are interested the Texas Frightmare Weekend 2010 DVD is avalible at www.texasfrightmareweekend.com retail available for $30.00 plus shipping.

Many interesting things happen at this show. There are screenings, QnAs and you get autographs. One of the many screenings there was 2001 Maniacs Field of Screams

I had fun at that screening mostly because the Cast was there and they were sitting right behind me and I could hear them reacting to the scenes.

2001 Maniacs Field of Screams is the sequel to the 2005 film starring Robert Englund which was a remake of the Hershel Gordon Lewis Film 2000 Maniacs. The story was about a group of Yankees that get trapped in this town during their 100 year festival and realize that they are being killed because 100 years earlier the town was slaughtered by a rouge band of union soldiers and they need revenge so that their spirits can rest in piece.

That brings us to this flick where Yankee tourists are no longer coming in that vicinity so they take the show on the road where they encounter a film crew that is filming a version of the Simple Life. Filling in for Robert Englund is my friend Bill Moseley in the role as Mayor Buckman who has some scenes with Lynn Shaye that I would rather not remember.

Well Needless to say some interesting things happen

This is definitely a flick for the Die Hard Horror fans who will love it. Those of you wimps that can’t stand gratuitous gore boobs and violence pass on it because I don’t want to hear you complain. I know that some of you will be complaining about the language but bear in mind that these guys are from the deep south over a century ago.

11 Dead Bodies
18 Breasts
2001 Beasts
1 Hit and Run
1 Sawed Woman
1 face ripping
1 electrocution

And some other murders that are so gristly that I cant say here (actually I can but I don’t want to spoil the flick)

Kudos to Bill Moseley for his performance and on a personal note extra Kudos to Asa Hope mostly because of my bad luck shooting her at TFW every time I either ran out of tape or her audio was bad or other interesting things happened but she was a good sport and I thank her for that and for not thinking that I am some weirdo. Don’t worry guys she is on the QnA next to the director.

3 Stars
Check it out

Casey C. That question is explored in the new Sci-Fi Action flick titled Predators.

Cult and action director Robert Rodriguez has executive produced the latest installment of the popular franchise that includes 2 solo features starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Glover respectively. Two crossovers with the Alien Franchise, and many Video Game and Toys to name the least.

The flick follows a group of earth’s best killers that are parachuted onto a jungle that none of them recognize and no knowledge of how they got there. Soon they realize that they aren’t in Kansas or Earth for that matter anymore. They also realize that the planet that they are on is also a privet Game Preserve to the Predators.

This group has to contend with a lot on this planet that includes, surviving the elements, nor killing each other, Predator Dogs, other Game that is on the planet that is not human, and a new breed of Predator that has never been seen on screen before.

This flick was definitely enjoyable and is definitely a popcorn movie that guys and fans of the franchise will love. Nonstop action and great special effects by FX master Greg Nicotaro as well as a great cast that I found surprising of the actors in their roles.

7 Dead Humans
4 Dead Predators
0 Breasts
8 Beasts
1 Samari vs Predator battle
2 Explosions
2 decapitations
1 Skull and Spine Rip
1 exploding Human
1 Impaling

3 ½ Stars

Check it out

Casey C. Is it just me or there are a lot of Action movies out this summer?

.. ..

Now what we have here Kiddies is what I consider to be an updated remake/prequel/reboot/what the hell else to call this movie that is trendy.

.. ..

Now I have to admit that I am a major fan of the original series. One of the things that you never got to see is “The Crime that they didn’t commit” Well in this flick you got to not only see the crime but you also got to see the formation of the A-Team and you got to see the reason that B.A. has an intense fear of Flying.

.. ..

The flick opens with a uber intense chase that makes the new 007 look tame and it is so ridicules that it rules. And it barely stops there.

.. ..

Lets take a look at the team

.. ..

..Col.., “..Hannibal..” Smith played by Liam Neeson The leader of the team and the man with the plan ....Hannibal.... was very loyal to the character in the original. On that note I am happy to see that they kept the cigars, that was a major prop for the character in the original and I was afraid that it would not be included in this flick because it is not PC and we can’t have the parents getting upset about that. And it was also a Cuban that he was smoking I don’t know if it was a CAO which seems that they are always sponsoring something. (Which I talk about while I puff on a Hoyo De Monterey 1066)....

.. ..

Lt, “Face” Peck played by Bradley Cooper excellent job here I am not all that familiar with him except for the Hangover. And I enjoyed his performance.....

.. ..

Sgt "B.A." Baracus played by Quentin “Rampage Jackson. I liked the fact that he played the character and not him acting like Mr T which is what I was expecting and they had a good character arc for him. Now I feel the need to point out when you first see the character he has PITTY tattooed on one hand and FOOL on the other. Now I know that is a play on Mr T’s famous catch phrase “I Pitty the Fool” …Just for the record that line wasn’t used in the A-Team it was used in Rocky 3 in the interview scene.....

.. ..

Captain H.M Murdock played by Sharlto Copley now this guy stole the movie. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the movie Murdock is nuts and he is used for most of the comic relief in the movie and the crowds were really into him.....

.. ..

Needless to say check this flick out go see it and if you do stay after the credits and you will see a scene where Murdock and Face interact with Murdock and Face if you know what I mean....

.. ..

3 Dead Bodies....

0 Breasts....

0 Beasts....

2 Car Chase....

1 Plane chase....

1 Flying tank Chase....

1 Inverted Helocopter chase....

9 Cigars....

I lost Track of Explosions....

.. ..

4 Stars ....

.. ..

Check it out

Casey C. Now don't get me wrong that is a tragedy and he will be missed but what people don't know is that we lost another great filmmaker recently

Charles B Pierce passed away this past month and I am getting a lot of people going "Who was that?" however people from The great state of Texas and Horror connoisseurs instantly know the name.

Pierce is best known for the documentary The Legend of Boggy Creek. The flick which is considered by many, Myself included to be a precursor to the Blair Witch Project, Tells the story of the Fouke Monster, A Bigfoot like creature near Tex-arcana that many have seen and some have been attacked. Being given a documentary feel Pierce hired actual locals to either play themselves are their relatives and has this feeling of fear and dread that has yet to be replicated in modern
films of today.

Pierce also was one of the writers of the Clint Eastwood Directed Dirty Harry epic Sudden Impact and it was Pierce that gave Clint the immortal line "Go Ahead Make My Day"

Another one of Pierce's flicks that is one of the greats of the Drive in, Grindhouses, and Video Stores is The Town that Dreaded Sundown.

This flick is another Documentary style film about the Phantom Killer, a serial Killer in Tex-arcana that was never apprehended and many claim still lives there.

Due to the fact that there has not been an official DVD release of the flick a lot have forgotten about this "lost Gem" however it can be found on the Bootleg Circuit at the Conventions as well as copies on the Internet.

The Town that Dreaded Sundown gained it's place in Horror History by receiving honorable mention in a scene in the 1996 film Scream.
The mask worn by the killer is a simple burlap sack that was also used by Horror Icon Jason Vorhees in Friday the 13th part 2 and early scenes in the 2009 Remake.

Another film that features the mask worn by the killer is the new film Triangle.

Now what we have here kiddies is the story of a young woman that goes with some friends on a boat, and after a while a storm takes out the boat and they encounter an abandoned ship and they have to face off against a mysterious masked killer. Who is this Killer, Why are they being Killed, What the heck is going on? You have to see the Movie to find out

7 confirmed Dead Bodies (see the Film and you will understand)
0 Breasts
3 Beasts
1 Car Crash

3 Stars

Check it out

Casey C. Romero is a friend of mine I first met him in 2007 at the Texas Frightmare Weekend and I have seen him a few times ever since. I still laugh at the time that he got my DP friend Brandon Drunk on Absolute Vodka...That was funny as hell. I'm not going to say that we are buds but I always look forward to seeing him at the cons.

Night of the Living Dead is one of my all time favorite flicks and I watch it at least once a year.
Another of my favorites is Creepshow, However one that I just couldnot get into is the Crazies.
Even though I will admit that it has it's more frightening areas in the fact that it is more believable than the Dead Films.

The Crazies is what it will always be an anti Vietnam flick that portrays the military as buffoonish and corrupt. which is a statement that Mr. Romero often places in his movies more and more.

Now lets take this to the present The Crazies has just been remade. Now I think may be the best time to remake the flick. I honestly think that the flick had better production value than the original.

On that side note That is my issue with these big budget remakes is that they are big budgets compared to the low budgets that the originals had. I think that the originals improved on their stories to make up for the lack of proper funding.

Now back on task. What we have here kiddies is the story of a small town that after a plane crashes in their river the town's drinking supply is contaminated by a biological agent that basically makes people go insane. The story focuses on the town sheriff (played by Timothy Olyphant) and his wife (Radha Mitchell) struggling to survive the attacks by the infected "Crazies" as well as the military that has locked down the town to cover up their own screw up.

Like I said earlier the production quality is improved as a result of the budget the flick has a more or less upbeat climax than the original and I feel that the timing of it's release is ether right on time or too late depending on your political views. In other words you will leave the theater feeling that you hate your government or that you really want to go home and pop in 28 Days Later because the plots feel really similar.

23 Dead Bodies
0 Breasts
8 Beasts
Military Villains
Crazed Zombies
Chopper Fu
Truck Fu
Burning
Hanging
Shooting
Implaings with Pitchforks

2 1/2 Stars

Check it out

Casey C.
