Infliction

I admit that I have recently been getting more involved on Twitter and other social networks in order to improve my business as well as marketing for my own projects and well I was contacted the other day by a group that were promoting their film Infliction.

It is again no secret that I am a fan on the Found Footage subgenre and I will always give one of the flicks a view and I have to admit that many of them are far more creepy than their third person perspective brethren.

Now many of these flicks are strictly from the perspective of the victims in the film and in the climax these characters meet their demise and it is revealed that the footage has been recovered to tell the story. However few of these films are taken from the point of view of the perpetrator of the crimes.

Now many of you that have followed me here on the Video Creep will remember my review of The Poughkeepsie tapes being among the first films that follow the killer rather than the victim.
I am here to bring you another film with Infliction.

Infliction follows the brothers John and Kenneth Stiles who document their murders of a select group of people ranging from a judge to a Christian couple and a social worker.

While the murders are occurring you are asking what is their motive and their past history with these victims.

Now many will complain about the acting in this film I feel the need to point out that characters in the film may feel the need to act since they know that they are being filmed and may be trying to act it out for the cameras and may be the reason for their performances in this film.

Also as pointed out earlier this is one of the first films that show from the point of view of the killers and the more that you discover their backstory you may begin to feel sympathy for them especially in the climax. Making the characters more sympathetic may be controversial to some but I say that since the characters are in fact our narrators of this film we look at the actions from their point of view and while not justifying their actions we are also shown their remorse.

This is definitely an   original story and it is worth the look.

Kevin Smith's Tusk

I know that in the time since the fire I have been struggling to get back to my feet and I really miss Austin and I still have not decided where or what I am going to do now but I will keep sending all of you flicks to watch here on the Video Creep.

Sadly once again I am going to have to miss out on the festivities that we in the genre call Fantastic Fest at the Alamo Drafthouse down in Austin and I have a promise to you all that I will return someday if not just for the festival.

I miss the talented genre filmmakers that you get to see in the lounge as well as hanging out with all the other bloggers in the Austin area as well as the reporters that come from across the country.
Despite the fact that I am not able to go to the festival this year The Alamo Drafthouse was nice enough to have their premiere of the film Tusk and ABCs of Death at all of their theatres to be followed by a QnA by  Tusk Star Justin Long and The director himself Kevin Smith.

Now there may be some of you out there that are asking me “Didn’t Kevin Smith get out of directing movies?” Well the answer to that statement is not really.

Yes Kevin Smith is now primarily a Podcaster but his venture with Smodcast has opened far more doors for him than he could have ever expected.

Hollywood Babble-On is currently being picked up as a program on AMC and will join Comic Book Men in the near future but the real story for now is TUSK.

The story of Tusk began on Smodcast 259 where Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier were discussing a mock news story in Canada where a man was asked to pretend to be a Walrus to a man that loved walruses and the comedic discussion between the podcasting duo which was influenced by the Human Centipede ended up becoming a pitch for a horror movie on the air and in the end Smith asked his internet audiences if they wanted to see him make the film.

Asking them to tweet #WalrusYes or #WalrusNo Smith received only one no and the man admitted that he he did so simply for the democratic process and Smith soon secured funding for the film.

Now it is no secret that I am in fact a fan of Kevin Smith so I was not about to miss this screening.

Tusk follows a Podcaster named Walter (Justin Long) who after heading out to Canada to interview the star of a viral video only to find out that the subject has taken his own life. While waiting around looking for another person to interview he sees an add in abar by a man that was looking for another man to tell his stories to.

After responding to the add Walter heads out to meet the man (Michael Parks) who tells him that while he was out to sea hunting a 25 Ft Long 3 Ton Great White Shark his ship sank making him the only survivor and his life was saved by a Walrus who became his friend.

The reality is that this man has been kidnapping people to make them into his own Human Walrus where he surgically sews him into his own flesh made Walrus suit with tusks and all.

While all of this is happening Walter’s Girlfriend and business partner are scouring through Canada searching for him and being aided by former inspector Guy Lapointe (Johnny Depp in an uncredited role).

I am quite amazed at many things about this film. The First being that it did in fact get made. Secondly fact that it has the cast that it has, With Justin Long, and Michael Parks alone but Haley Joel Osment as well.

Smith revealed during the QnA that he had known Johnny Depp for years since their daughters attended school together and Depp was more than eager to play the role as the eccentric detective.

Johnny Depp and Kevin Smith’s daughters have a small role as convenience store clerks and will have their own spinoff in the near future.

The main thing that I am surprised by this flick is in fact how good it actually is. There are going to be some detractors to the film due to the subject matter alone but genre fans will love the film especially fans of the Human Centipede as it is in fact lighter in tone than the popular series of films.
The Walrus alone is amazing.

This film was loaded with references and Easter Eggs for the Smodco followers. Ponder rock, The Hollywood Helper, Ralph Garman are just a few of the references that fans of the many shows on Smodcast will catch.

I Spit on Your Grave 2

Well as they say, Better late than never.

I know that I am pretty tardy on this review but I have been dealing with a lot in the past year and some flicks do briefly get past me so my apologies for the late review.

As many of you know I am not just a fan but an avid defender of I Spit on Your Grave as well as it’s remake so naturally I am going to check out the sequel to the remake naturally titled  I Spit on Your Grave 2.

Steven R. Monroe once again is at the helm of this flick with the location Sofia, Bulgaria providing the backdrop for the story with British actress Jemma Dallender in the lead role.

Now there was an “Unofficial” Sequel to the original film titled Savage Vengeance that did in fact star Camille Keaton semi reprising her role as Jennifer Hills once again being attacked and pursuing vengeance upon her attackers and well from what I hear and seen you are honestly not missing much so and I don’t recommend it any further.

This film features a different story and characters and well a different premise all together.

Dallender stars as Katie Carter, a model from Missouri who has recently moved to New York to further her modeling career and upon responding to an add advertising for pictures for her portfolio meets a trio of sleazy characters and after refusing to work nude for them leaves in a huff.

Eventually she finds herself being stalked by one of the men and one night she is assaulted in her home by this sick bastard.

A friend tries to intervene and is killed in his attempt and the girl is assaulted further. Calling his brothers to help him deal with the aftermath they realize that there is too much evidence and the girl is drugged only to wake up in another place.

While making her escape she is horrified to realize that she in in fact in Bulgaria and the local police don’t believe what she is telling her and refuse to take her to the American Embassy and she ends up right back where she started and is further tortured by her attackers and then she is buried alive inside of a trunk.

Well as you would guess by the title as well as the franchise history she manages to escape from this ordeal and as they say in the Holy Bible “Vengeance is Mine”. (Trust me that will come into play).

Much like its predecessor but unlike the original this film makes our heroine into a character that stalks her victims with great vengeance and furious anger than the seductive approach that was taken in the original. Now not that I am complaining it is just an interesting approach.

5 Dead Bodies
2 Breasts
Cattle prod to the groin
Cattle prod to the throat
Ball Crushing
Infection smearing
Feces drowning

Now again this is a different approach to this type of film but like it’s predecessor events like this can actually happen and sadly they have. I must admit that I have encountered people like these characters In my business and that is why this film stands out for me.

I really liked the fact that in this film unlike it’s predecessors where the only male characters that you encounter are the rapists that makes you feel that the film is saying that all men are rapists, however this flick features other male characters that actually try to help the woman in distress.

Highlander fans will be happy to see Kronos himself Valentine Pelka as the Priest that helps Katie and advises the authorities.

All In All Not a bad Flick I do recomend Checking it out.
