Halloween Picks:Trick'r Treat

What do we think of in the way of Halloween Icons and Mascots?

Christmas has Santa Clause, Easter has the Easter Bunny, and However There is no Halloween mascots.

Now there are many familiar images of Halloween.

There is the Jack O Lantern, which is the closest that we get to a Icon of the Holiday but in most cases the Jack O Lantern is an inanimate object not really a character. Then there are Black Cats, Witches, Monsters, and Ghosts.

However there is no real character that we feel represents Halloween.

Now I know what you are thinking what about Michael Myers from the movie Halloween and I’ll say yes but he is more of a character from a movie with the same name and that wasn’t even the original idea for the character.

I am not the only one that is thinking of this for the character the season.

Filmmaker Michael Dougherty himself wondered this and he while doodling created this character Sam. For Dougherty, Sam became the devious mascot for the season.

Beginning with the animated short Season’s Greetings featuring Sam the audience is treated to what seems to be a young trick or treater, But Sam is not what he seems.

Dougherty then went on to work on the writing for X2 and Superman Returns and finally began shooting Trick r Treat in 2007

Finally after much anticipation the film was released in 2009.

Trick 'R Treat is a film that I will call a cross between Pulp Fiction and Halloween. In the fact that the film is an anthology film that has three different stories all taking place around the same time.

The stories include a group of girls trying to get their youngest (Anna Paquin) to have her "first time", an Evil Principal and his son, a prank gone wrong, and a mean old man who refuses to give out candy being attacked by a trick or treater. The element that ties all stories together is the mysterious Sam, a Trick or Treater But who is Sam.

Trick R Treat ties many of the rules and traditions of Halloween into this film. Many legends and myths of the holiday are here from poisoned candy to the dead roaming the streets in Halloween Night. There is even a nod to Michael Myers early in the movie.

The stories all share characters as well as showing us what may happen to us if we violate the rules of All Hollows Eve. Some characters have a role in one story and meet their final fate in another story in the tradition of Tales from the Crypt.

It would not surprise me if Sam wasn’t named after Samhain which is the true origin of Halloween.
